From 1978 to 1996, 200,000 square miles, 13% of the rainforest was destroyed.	Deforestation doubled from 1994 to 1995.	The logging industry, dominated by Asian multinationals, employs 250,000 people.

30,000 claims are pending to mine in indigenous areas. Illegal miners from outside these areas bring disease, violence, and environmental destruction to the home of the native peoples.
